How to Measure Your Hot Tub Cover

Four measurements, a tape measure and a set square. Most people are done in ten minutes, and we check every size with you before your cover is made.

Getting the size right matters: a cover that's even a couple of centimetres out won't seal properly. Every TubLid cover is made to order, so it takes about ten minutes with a tape measure to get it right first time.

Know your hot tub model? Great, tell us in the notes. We still ask everyone to measure, because tubs of the same model can vary, and once a cover is cut it can’t be altered. We check every size against our templates before anything is made.

What you'll need

  • A tape measure (a metal one is easiest)
  • A set square, or a large book with a square corner
  • Your phone, for a photo

Step 1: Check the shape

  • Square or rectangle with rounded corners – the most common shape.
  • Square or rectangle with cut corners – the corners are cut off at an angle, as on octagon-style tubs.
  • Round – a circular tub.

Step 2: Measure the right thing

If your old lid still fits well, you can measure the old lid. If it's warped or doesn't fit, take it off and measure the outside edge of the acrylic lip, where the lid sits.

Step 3: Size A and Size B

Measure edge to edge across the widest point in both directions, in centimetres. Size A is one direction and Size B is the other, at a right angle. Measure each twice and round to the nearest 0.5 cm. On a square tub, they'll be the same.

Round tubs: measure the diameter edge to edge through the centre, in two directions, and use the larger figure.

Step 4: The corners

No set square? Use two straight pieces of wood, or two long books. Lay one along each side of the tub so they meet in a square corner over the curve. Measure from where they meet to where the curve starts. This is the bit most people find tricky, and once you’ve done it once you’ll see how simple it is.

Rounded corners: put a set square in the corner of the tub. Measure from the point of the set square to where the curve of the corner starts on one side. That's your corner radius.

Cut corners: do the same, and measure from the point of the set square to where the cut starts on one side. That's your cut-corner size.

Step 5: Skirt depth

The skirt is the flap that hangs down the side of the tub. Measure from the top edge of the lid to the bottom of the flap, or from the top of the acrylic lip down to just above the cabinet. Choose the nearest of 2", 3", 4", 5" or 6".

Step 6: Fold direction

Every cover folds in half along a hinge. Note whether the fold line runs parallel to Size A or to Size B, and where any steps, controls or a cover lifter sit, so the cover opens the right way.

Step 7: Lock-down straps

Every cover comes with 4 lock-down straps, 11" long, in the standard positions. If your tub's clips are somewhere different, choose that option when you order and we'll call you to confirm before we make your cover.

Step 8: Choose your thickness

Our covers taper so rain runs off. The figures are the thickness at the centre and at the edge.

  • Standard 4" to 2" – for sheltered gardens and lighter use.
  • Deluxe 5" to 3" – our most popular choice for UK gardens.
  • Super Deluxe 6" to 4" – for exposed spots, colder winters and the lowest running costs.

Step 9: Take a photo

Take a photo of your tub with the tape measure in shot. We check every set of measurements before production starts.

Still unsure? Email your measurements and photo to hello@tublid.co.uk and we'll confirm your size before you order.
